He's not getting caught in an algorithm or mired in a paperwork mishap.

I used to host a comedy open mic, and since the bar was nice, when I hosted the "show" they would pay me $20 for hosting for a couple hours. Anyways, at the end of the year they sent me a w2 or something showing they paid me (I thought it was all under the table, I mean, all told it added up to less than $500). So I went and added it to my taxes come tax time and it completely wiped out any return I was getting, plus I owed the federal government around $400 because I didn't have my taxes withheld on that $20 a show money.

Here's a tip. If you don't want IRS troubles coming to you don't fill out their damn forms. Every IRS form is an adhesion contract forcing you into involuntary servitude creating tax slave status. They love to make your lives hell. Stop giving them fuel to burn you with.
