Not a failed state, but we’re definitely trending toward something like Brazil. The integrity of the federal democracy is on life support, but it more or less works locally (at least where I live). My measure of failure is when local police and bureaucrats start expecting bribes on the regular.

Shantytown/enclave states like Brazil and Haiti and Kenya and so on, with massive populations in unpowered, unwatered shacks with walled and guarded wealthy enclaves elsewhere are absolutely failed states. We're joining them
