The thing that bothers me the most about this, is that people are saying he did this due to "mental illness", and we don't know that. We don't know much about the guy other than he was on active duty. They're taking this sacred act of self-immolation, and turning it into a gaslit armchair psychfest. Fraud would kick them all in the ass.

I wonder whether people are pointing to mental illness as a way to justify to ourselves why we won't take extreme action. It's hard to look at self-immolation and not wonder what it says about the rest of us.
This is something I've been wondering. Maybe it's something like, "Only a person with a mental illness would do something like that!" I think this means that it's not within their actual logical mind or imagination to actually do something like this themselves. If I had announced that I was going to do this to my mother, she would say, "Oh, get over yourself."

"It is no measure of health to be well-adjusted to a profoundly sick society."
What the Scottish psychiatrist RD Laing was precisely writing about in the '50s.
