Agreed with all of this, and it doesn't even delve into the American tendency to collapse all Asian people into a single group. There is little reason for a Chinese-American to feel represented by a Filipino-American or a Thai-American to feel represented by an Indian-American. All of those different national origins have different stories and American experiences and referring to them all as generically Asian elides all of that. It's another thing that the majority-white media establishment needs to stop doing, but like most things, the problem goes much deeper than that.

Maybe she shouldn't identify with whatever is convenient at the time she needs to identify. First Indian-American or first African-American? Which is it? It is also odd Biden and his party decided ahead of time they would choose a black woman as his running mate. They figured it would appeal to their voters. How is this not the most racist thing of all? The old white man making the final call? Then a large list of "powerful, black men" write a letter to Biden stating he HAS to pick a black woman, nothing else will be acceptable. Sad the powerful, black leaders on that list are rappers and pseudo-celebrities. Your tired of it, the media and so called journalists are a very vocal minority. You are tired of it already, the majority of the US has been tied of this tired narrative and are tired of being called racists just because of the color of their skin. How is that not in itself racist? The best comedy on TV right now is the virtual DNC. I had to blink and make sure I wasn't watching the most recent SNL. I'm lucky though because I am white so I guess my life will always be a cakewalk. And hey, my DNA says I have such a mixed up makeup that I guess I will be able to identify as whoever I need to be if I ever get nominated for president. That won't happen though because I am not woke enough (see Biden's interview with Cardi B to see how woke he is s/ :))

I, for one am sick of being called racist because I'm white. I was raised on a farm, went to school and played ball with people of all races. We simply were friends, or not, mostly based on character, or common interests. My proposal would be to eliminate any reference to race or ethnicity on any application of any kind. Wouldn't it be correct to just view people on what they have done, or what they are capable of doing? Why must we always worry about it, or even focus on it? I believe that Harris, as did E. Warren feels that it helps them in some fashion.. Lets just stop it! If not, why not? I was raised poor, figured out early that I would have to work my butt off if I wanted to have nicer things, or achieve any financial stability. I also believe strongly that equal opportunity means literally just that, not equal outcome.. Its out there, go get it..

What race she is doesn't matter to me. Her ideas about this country do. I find her thought frightening at best no matter what race she is! She will say what ever it takes to get the nod. That has been proven.

At this point why do we care about race? Why? We need people who are going to face challenges like never before. Lets look at the individuals, and F*%k people for always bring race into EVERYthing. We are past that. The PLANET is in peril now, not someones precious 'culture'.

Why are people protesting in the Streets? Police.

What is Kamala Harris? A cop

Who helped put millions of mostly people of color in prison most for non-violent crimes? Joe Biden via the '94 crime bill... and the DNC wonders why all the polls have fallen to within the margin of error between Joe and a game show host con man....

Love this. Believe me, I am not an alt-right troll when I say this.... America loves clubbing anyone who looks black as black.

There is a world of a difference between a Nigerian immigrant and an African-American (arguably descendant of a slave) - the baggage, the history, the systemic racism that the latter had to endure through their life, and more importantly woven into their mindset by their parents.

Obama and Harris look black, but really arent the black America today. They are as good at representing the true blacks of this country as say, Joe Biden.

What? "White people are endlessly terrible at handling the convergence of race and power"...did I miss that event? When did it happen. It must of been during that recent meteor shower right? I'm white, at least I think I'm white...I mean I'm of Irish decent, have light skin...does that count? I'm not sure, you know the Irish in 1800's faced wide spread discrimination, were slaves or equivalent slaves in Ireland to English land owners...does that count for anything? Do I get out of racism jail for free...what are we talking about anyway? Are we looking for equal outcomes or equal opportunity....I vote for equal opportunity...the former leads no where good. The later leads to self respect and self independence.

In a political strategy context the Biden team (and Biden himself) committing on gender and race before an actual human seemed to create an "audition" type vibe for the spot. So naturally women of any color would vie and even subjugate themselves for the position (Stacey Abrams live VP snub) to an old white guy holding all the power. Maybe I'm on too medicinal splifs, but I can't wrap my brain around how choosing your running mate this way isn't anything other than a perverted version of the 'triangulation' strategy which was shit even when we weren't privy to the actual misogyny and racism this path can't help but lead you down. Hello Bill Clinton.

The right-wing questioning of Harris' US citizenship is a practical example of the existence of white privilege in America. The cultural default mode is to assume that a white person is a U.S. citizen unless they display obvious tells like an accented voice. OTOH, Asians are assumed to be immigrants to the U.S. unless proven otherwise.

"For me, it clouds the struggles I have with the feeling that I am now “represented” by Harris."

I'm gonna probably really stick my foot in it here. Is it fucked up that Kamala 'represents' you, when India and the Phillipines are as far from each other geographically as Portugal and Iran, and very likely further apart culturally than Portugal and Iran?

I mean, you're both for lack of nuance in American English 'Asian', but Asia is a massive continent. Turks, Indians, Iranians, Russians, Chinese, Laotians and Austronesians don't really have all much in common with each other. But then again you have to remind people Africa isn't a country. The only continent that's allowed to have nuance and difference is Europe.
