There is, actually, one sure-fire way Harry could remove himself from the line of succession: he could convert to Catholicism.

(It would help, though wouldn’t be strictly necessary, if he also joined the IRA.)

Personally I’m in favor of keeping Harry Windsor “hostage” here in the United States as long as possible for the express purpose of using the prospect of further embarrassment to keep our Commonwealth allies in line.

Oh, you don’t want to agree to such-and-such trade or defense deal? It would be *deeply unfortunate* if someone were to pick up the red telephone on their desk labeled “Oprah Winfrey” and have her do another tell-all interview with certain pair of Californians…

Considering how well this sort of hostage situation has worked for the royal courts of England and France over the centuries, it’s only fair we should get to use it, too. Though for starters we should make the Ragland-Spencers pay for their own court attire and accommodations, much like the Louises did with the aristocrats they kept hostage at Versailles.

Wasn’t it Andrew Sullivan who was busted for having pot on him while on federal grounds, only for the Justice Department to say, whoopsie, we don’t want to screw up his visa renewal?

If any more of the Royals die, I think my mum is going to have kittens. She bawled for a really long time when the Queen died. "I grew up with them," she tells people, which sounds like she knows them personally,, and says it matter of factly, like everyone should know this. It actually means she "grew up with watching them on the TV and hearing them on the radio."

Yeah, it’s not like someone actually important had died, like Judi Dench or Maggie Smith or Cher. European royalty is a dime a dozen!

Expand full comment

EXACTLY! You can actually see how prolific the European Royalty is by going to iTunes and clicking on the "New" documentaries. 3/4s are that, they even go back to the 1400s. I can't imagine watching all those and learning anything.

If you’re talking about an I130 application, there are no drug questions on it to obtain spousal benefits.

Dude, Harry is as much a monarch as his uncle Andy was. Once his brother had children he is no no longer in the line. It goes to his nephew after the deaths of his father and brother

The line of succession is more or less indefinitely long. Every known member of the British royal family could get killed in a nuclear war, and there’d still, in theory, be a king or queen of England.

(Look up what happened after the 1714 death of Queen Anne, AKA why Meghan Markle’s husband Heinrich von Hanover von Saxe-Coburg-Gotha is in line to the English throne in the first place.)

Anyway, the only absolute limit on the line of succession (aside from total extinction of the human race) is potential heirs being Roman Catholic.

Yes I know, but in the modern era, the proability that Harry's brother and two sons will pre-decease him are extremely small. Small enough that is consider him a monarch is silly. After all, if you eliminate enough people all of us would eventually qualify.

The classic scenario is Queen Zara from V for Vendetta.

I have no affection for Harry Windsor but he is not a monarch, and is in fact in conflict with the British monarchy. Thus I have no choice but to critically support him and his wife in that context.

It would particularly funny if Harry was forced to apply for asylum.

I say send him back to his homeland as well. Which is Germany cuz they’re fucking German and the fact everyone goes along with the “Windsor” facade is insane. Although given Trump’s family’s history with name changes he doesn’t have much of a leg to stand on there I suppose.

I actually have had another idea: the Windsors should be exiled to the Falkland Islands.

There are a number of reasons this would be ideal:

(1) The Falkland Islands are a safe distance from Great Britain and every other Commonwealth, so the Windsors would not be tempted to meddle there.

(2) The Falkland Islands are one of the only places the British have occupied that did not have an indigenous population for them to genocide. (The main alternative that comes to mind is Pitcairn Island, which would be inhumane. Maybe Andrew Windsor could be sent to Pitcairn Island on his own, though.)

(3) The Falkland Islands are indistinguishable from Scotland, so the Windsors would feel right at home, especially if they got to relocate Balmoral and the Falkland Palace in Fife to live in there.

(4) The Falklanders are insane and jingoistic, and they are roughly the appropriate population size to still have a tribal leader, so they would absolutely adore the Windsors, unlike the people of modern Britain. This is to say that the Windsors would probably actually be happier there than they are now.

(5) It would annoy Argentina (to an extent that would be extremely funny).

Anyway yeah then the criteria for any Windsor being allowed to leave the Falkland Islands would be converting to Roman Catholicism, at which point they might as well just move to Argentina (or Brazil, or Portugal, considering Portugal’s centuries-long alliance with Britain, but definitely not to Spain).

Also the precedent for this obviously is Napoleon’s exile in Saint Helena, only the Falklands would be more of a humane rehabilitation for the Windsors than it would be a prison.

I’d be completely on board with this. The falklands are more unhinged about their faith to the crown than anyone else. So why not give them those inbred freaks. As a treat.

Expand full comment

Also, if you’re not familiar with Pitcairn Island, look it up on Wikipedia to see why it would be inhumane to send them there instead…

Also, two words: Love Island.

Though Love Island would definitely be inhumane.

I don't see anyone objecting to Crown Prince Pavlos and Princess Marie-Chantal of Greece living in the US (OK, the Greek Royals were deposed in 1973, but there could be a coup, you never know!)

Harry will never be King, I presume he pays his taxes, Meghan is still a US citizen, which means their children are as well. As long as the US Gov't isn't paying for his security, why do you care?

Personally I think we should all consider it a breach of honor that members of the Greek royal family are shirking their mandatory service in the Greek military.
